game tips

Dungeon and Dragons Online (DDO) while based on the 3.5 rule set had to take some liberties to allow for the fact that it is in fact a MMORG. Also DDO is inspired and in may in some part may have inspired some of the 4.0 rule set to some degree, just don't ask WotC! ;) Keeping that in mind your pnp experience is a great guide but this is also a fast-pace no pause button thriller that you need to keep your whits about you. Don't Panic here at the Defense Guild have a few tips and tricks to help you out and get you started.

  1. If you are new to DDO check out www.ddocast.com it is weekly pod cast and a great way to learn about a lot about the game's past and keep up with the current events.

  2. Find a guild. I suggest the Defense Guild as we are a lot like Cheers (everyone knows your name) but any guild that is willing to teach you and treat you well is a good guild.

  3. Remember to use your brokers to sell your more expensive items. Weapon brokers are located in House D; Armor brokers are located in House K and the rest of the brokers are located in the Marketplace. They give you more gold than the vendors or Inn Keepers and remember to use your highest haggle item.

  4. At low level, break every breakable and pick up every collectible.  These collectibles can be turned in for some loot which can be sold.

  5. Make sure you pick up a bag, any size will do, so you can hold your collectibles, gems and ingredients.  When you arrive in the Harbor, you will be given a small collectible bag and a small gem bag.

  6. Go out and buy yourself a good microphone or a head set.  You don't have to go buy the latest/greatest but you need to be able to communicate via voice chat.  Not being able to communicate via Voice chat is so 20th century.

  7. Don't forget to sign up on the official DDO forums http://forums.ddo.com/index.php and use it also to expand your knowledge about the game and to ask questions.  There are sections specific to class, race and an area for the server.  There is also a server marketplace to buy or sell items.  Typically the prices are better here and within reason.

  8. Communication is one of the main keys to success in the game.  If you are new to a quest or raid, tell them.  Listen to the instructions from the group or raid leader.  If there is a great deal of travel, stick to the rear with the gear and observe while following.  Don't run off trying to show how good you are.  Doing that may cause a party wipe.

  9. You can min/max to your hearts content, but at the same time the game is always in flux try to stay some what well rounded or you might find yourself in a time were you feel out dated and/or nerfed.

  10. Some skills are key to your survival. A few points in Balance or swim or many others can be the difference living and dieing.  Until you really understand the many differences in the skills ask about them and what ones you might need. (everyone needs at least a little balance in my option, I max it out if I can)

  11. Umd: with a starting chr in the green and drive to have a good Umd score any cross class skilled umder can get a umd into the high 30s. Higher the starting CHR the higher the ending umd score and less items you “must have” but a 12 can get a 37-38 umd 39 if you get one of those +4 tomes!

  12. With the introduction of Reincarnation, it is wise to hold onto any bound to account/bound to character named low level items deemed useful.
